Although he was already sixty years old when the series began, Andy Griffith had no trouble carrying Matlock and making it incredibly popular. This series ran for nine seasons with a total of 195 episodes. In addition to Griffith, this series also featured Nancy Stafford, Julie Sommers and Clarence Gilyard Jr.
In this series, Griffith played Ben Matlock. Matlock was a high-priced defense attorney. One of the things that made this series so interesting was the fact that the majority of Matlock’s cases involved a murder. This made the series very entertaining and engaging to watch.
Because this series ran for so many seasons, there are quite a few interesting pieces of trivia about it. The first is that several of the eventual co-stars of this show appeared as guests before being cast as full-time leads. In fact, Daniel Roebuck appeared as 3 different characters before getting his ongoing role. The next is that the show featured appearances from five different actors from The Andy Griffith Show, including Don Knotts.
While it would be rude to mention his name, one actor was fired after being on the show for the first three seasons because he had ongoing issues with substance abuse. A happier piece of trivia is that two of the series leads were actually fans of Andy Griffith when they were kids. As a result, they felt quite honored to have the opportunity to work with him.
If you’re a fan of Andy Griffith but you’ve never watched Matlock, you need to check it out because you won’t be disappointed!
